“Without
friends no one would choose to live, though he had all other goods – Aristotle
One of my greatest motivation said by a respected writer Rev.Mrs
Oluwafunmilayo Folahanmi in one of her
book goes thus “One of the greatest problems we face in our modern society is scarcity
of good friends” Isn’t that
true? It is the truth.
We all need
someone we can be open with. No one makes it alone. People who need people are
the luckiest people in the world. It is a simple fact that “Nobody is a lone ranger”
even to the greatest of all known superheroes, they all have company before they
achieve their feats.
Do you have a friend?
Are you friendly?
You don’t have a friend?
You are not friendly?
Are you in any relationship whatsoever?
If your answer to the above questions is rightly YES, I urge you to
read on, value these tips, use this tips and act according to the tips.
Building friendship takes time. It requires self-disclosure,
therefore any friendship has risks. Friendships are complicated but important
parts of everybody’s life. But good friendships are worth the effort it takes
to maintain them.
v
LISTENING
AND ACKNOWLEDING: There is big difference in hearing and
listening. Listening is an act of love which involves putting one’s agenda on
hold and devotes oneself to knowing and caring for one’s friend in total
submission and attention while talking. Friends are not looking for someone who
can talk very impressively or cleverly or with great wit but rather looking for
a very good listener.
“All people want is someone to listen – ELLIOT
”
v
TALKING: Talking
is a primary building block of any relationship. It is an integral component of
any relationship. Talking strengthened friendship and to convert a total
stranger to a close friend, communication through talking is vital.
“When you see your buddy, you become a
talkative – Yoruba Adage”
v
BE
VULNERABLE: The truth is no one can always play out to be strong always. You
have to be vulnerable sometimes in as much you have your strength and weakness.
Let your friend know your strength likewise your weakness.
“If you want deep, lasting friendship, you
cannot always be the strong one – John C. Maxwell”
v
DO SNAIL
FALL: To snail fall is not a big term but rather gradually and slowly
revealing yourself into a new friendship but when you are into it, stand firm
and constant. It takes long time to grow an old friendship. Friendship has its
good and bad times, there will time for disagreements and quarrels because of
differences in background but determination, willingness and persistence will
make it a worthwhile at the end of the day.
“Maintaining a friendship is crucial, best
friends take time – Rev. Y.F Folahanmi”
v
DON’T USE
HUMOUR TO PUT YOUR FRIENDS DOWN: It is true that in any relationships
whatsoever, great humour is needed but never use humour to bring down people
especially your friend.
v
DON’T
RESENT YOUR FRIEND’S SUCCESS: Never let resentment comes into play with your
friend’s success but rather strive to admire her achievements.
v
BE
FLEXIBLE: Build up the ability to change readily to meet new
circumstances. Flexibility is always important for maintaining friendships.
Don’t be rigid!
